For your information: The graffiti of the girl is part of a project called: 'strahlende orte/radiating places' from 2006. 7 Young people from Minsk, Moscow and Berlin have eternalized their art in pripyat.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 19:20:20
It is fall out with a mixture of dusk Im sure. Um, thats what happened there.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 19:17:49
Its not tic tac toe, its a foot print from the bottom of a sneaker. That is why the first person said it was "discarded and walked on." Very sad the manner in which they had to leave.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 19:12:58
I know, I clicked to this picture and almost jumped in my seat seeing that picture.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 19:02:48
Very interesting and captivating. This may be my most favorite picture yet next to the 1st boat picture.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 19:00:50
Seems that the tree picked a good place to grow...top floor of the building...right where the sun comes in. Although, its wonderful that vegetation is growing abound, its still sad knowing that the civilization that once was is no longer or will be for hundreds or thousands of years more.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:39:11
Regardless of the mass devastation caused by this incident, this is truly a beautiful picture taken from atop a building.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:38:02
There are people living in Chernobyl but only the workers or older people who refused to stay away from their native soil.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:35:53
I grew up about 15 miles from Zion, IL where a nuclear power plant was run. It has since been retired and does not produce power. This certainly has opened my eyes to the fact that I am glad its not in service anymore. Its very scary.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:32:23
There are no souvenirs from Pripyat or Chernobyl. Its not like this was a vacation to Greece, DisneyLand or a Carnival Cruise. It would be an insult to take something like that and bring it to your home so that you could show it off. This isnt one of those times to remember and share laughter over.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:28:31
Is it true that this particular site is one of the most radioactive areas outside of the reactor sarcophagus itself?
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:25:55
Or perhaps someone who used to live in Pripyat. To assume that "tourists" are the only visitors to this desolate place is just silly.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:22:42
Yes, but is HIGHLY radioactive...especially the moss.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:21:44
I love this photo. Not because of where it is but because I am a huge fan of black and white or sepia photos with just that splash of color to catch the eye. Knowing where it is and what that ferriswheel represents makes the picture very eerie and sad.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:18:50
So what if you register with high radiation? Do they let you leave or do they take you somewhere to be quarantined? Was your radiation high?
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:16:07
Are you crazy? Did you climb up there just to take that picture? Were you wearing protective gear while moving things around, shuffling through and exploring?
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:12:33
Very impressive picture.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:12:09

It looks as if it is crying. :(
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:08:22
I have seen this statue in many other pictures that are floating around out there. But seeing it up close is truly chilling. How horrible a death those brave men died. How horrible.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:04:28
It looks pleasant because there arent any more humans to live on the soil or that will or can live on its soil to continue to desecrate the land. :(
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:02:34
Very cool picture.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:01:59
Are there still ships/boats floating freely in the water? Or are most cast up on shore?
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 17:00:09
I was shocked with the amount of animals living in the Exclusion Zone. They thrive...
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 16:58:25
I agree. Very haunting and real.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 16:53:02
I find it very heart-wrenching that their family or close friends cannot come back to visit when they want and they are now dammed there for all eternity. :(
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 14:39:44
Where is this?
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 14:38:30
Thierry, where are you from?
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 14:37:24
Yeah, an interrogation room with a bottle of wine on the floor. Some interrogation!
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 14:32:45
Is this the gymnasium? Im guessing it is as the floor looks to be all wood and obvious warping and rotting has taken place from the radiation and elements over the last 26 years.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 14:30:40
The colors really make the photo. I guess I figured that all the colors should be washed out and gone by this time leaving more of a skeletal shell. But time has not taken the color. Amazing picture...
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 14:27:54
I often wonder if those that were effected directly by this disaster see these photos and recognize the room or belongings as their own...
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 14:24:34
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 14:24:01
I know. None have captions...only comments from those viewing. The captions would have been nice. But the pictures do speak a thousand words.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 14:22:40
It looks as though it was folded and the photographer opened it up. Im sure being inside a building and covered in dust and such has kept it in its condition.
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 14:20:40
This and the others are all amazing photos. I have to watch what I say and not call them wonderful or beautiful as this and all that your photos capture are not beautiful (well outside of the trees and flowers youve camptured). But your photos simply capture the true vision of disaster...great work!
IAmMe - 2012-05-31 14:02:51
Is this a restaurant? The condensation on the windows is creepy like its cool inside and warm on the outside.
Thierry from reactor4 - 2012-05-30 22:46:08
there is no specific reason why some dolls have a black face, its strange... a room with 20 dolls and about 3-4 will have a black face, others not... its strange, i know... its not burned or melted or set in scene, thats for sure... its unknown... maybe the movie "Chernobyl Diaries" will tell the truth ;-)
Thierry from reactor4 - 2012-05-30 22:41:41
I didnt set it in scene but i supose it was by someone else... touching stuff isnt that good but hell, i stayed there for 7 days and nights, its impossible to stay clean in that time :-)
Thierry from reactor4 - 2012-05-30 22:38:13
Moss has the natural ability to absorb radioactive material. Mushrooms do the same... officialy its forbidden to step on the moss but in reality i didnt care that much, the moss is just everywhere...
IAmMe - 2012-05-30 22:24:39
I would think they all would have been trained and prepared in case something happened like what did. Seeing that the city was built for those that worked in the nuclear plant and their families I would think so. Creepy though.
IAmMe - 2012-05-30 22:20:55
Can anyone tell me why some of the faces on these dolls have turned black? Is that from the fallout?
IAmMe - 2012-05-30 22:19:39
Ive seen many photos of these little bottles of Polysorbum in many different buildings. It is very sad. I cannot even fathom the fear and sickness felt by all when this happened and even into these current years.
IAmMe - 2012-05-30 22:17:49
Did you pose these dolls this way? I think touching them would be bad for your health? No?

Wow...(thats all I can say about these stadium photos)
IAmMe - 2012-05-30 22:09:54
I havent seen this one yet on any of the sites Ive searched. What is this of? What building...very cool photo!
IAmMe - 2012-05-30 22:08:56
I have to agree with Salena. As much as I hate to admit this, even though the thought of what happened there in that city scares the hell out of me, its so addicting to see what it has done. I have to thank those of you who have given me a look into the world there as I wouldnt have the courage to do it myself.
IAmMe - 2012-05-30 22:05:48
I sure hope you werent standing on the moss. I heard it was highly radioactive. But the lighting in your pictures is incredible. Sets them apart from all the others Ive seen.
IAmMe - 2012-05-30 22:03:19

Nono, the sarcophagus is only build around reactor 4 and thats another building (with reactor 1 - 2 - 3 and 4)... this is building for reactor 5 and 6, in construction during the disaster... they stopped working and left the cranse because they where highly contaminated...
btw -> thx for your feedback ;-)
mina - 2011-04-06 21:11:00
mina - 2011-04-06 21:03:41
so those cranes there are in that place since the construction of the 5-6 reactor's building, and they left them there...? i was thinking that they were using them to build the 'sarcophagus'...

This image truly captures the essence of the desolation of the whole area. Ships are often seen as grand and fun things, but here, on the contrary, it sits and rots away helplessly, much like the rest of the area. If any snow falls in this area of the forbidden zone. I think the frozen ship would be even more haunting. I am young, but I feel that this is something my generation should be exposed to, this horrible accident. It would open their eyes.

Heidi Kegler - 2010-10-19 23:02:25
I sit here with an ache in my heart and tears in my eyes. I feel an immense and desperate need to keep looking at what was once a happy place someone called home. There are no words in the English language that could express how moving all of these pictures are. To capture a moment where life has ceased to exist. I can hear the echoes of children laughing through each picture. I would do anything to erase what has been done to this beautiful place, and these beautiful people. Is there a God? How could there be, I find myself questioning everything I once believed in. Thank you for risking your life to bring me (and the public)the only truth that can be found from this disaster, the research I find seems to be empty lies, and hidden secrets! I have lost my Grandfather to Colon/Liver Cancer in 1998. To hear the last breath escape his lips is a pain that I will carry in my mind forever, that pain is unbearable for me. I could not imagine losing everyone I know to such a monster! In the wake of such a tragedy, these people I call Angels deserve recognition for what they have went through? I light a candle every year on the 26th of April, and I think everyone on this Earth should, its the least we could do to show the ones who died, or who are sick, or displaced, that even now, years after the fact, are not and never will be forgotten. Thank You, Heidi Kegler/Melancholy in Michigan!

It was used as a over-horizon radar by the Soviet Union military forces. This facility is no longer in use. For more details, see wikipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Woodpecker

There is nobody living in Pripyat, its forbidden for everybody at night to be in the 10km-zone.
But in the 30km-zone about 4000 people live there, all for cleanup and renovation work, mostly Russian an French people.

about 4500 people live there now

This is at the centre of Chernobyl city, the town is still maintained a little bit. 4000 people live there to clean up the zone, many Russian and French people... 10 meters away from this picture you have 1 of the 2 small supermarkets of the zone.

Looks like someone is still mowing the grass...
Thierry from reactor4 - 2009-07-08 23:15:32
it is the church of Chernobyl town, still maintained and used for the 4000 people living in chernobyl...
Most of the churches in the zone are gone since WWII, destroyed...
Trevi - 2009-07-08 20:30:45
This building and photograph are beautiful. One question: is this building still being maintained or used? Is it not in a forbidden zone?

I disagree with Matt.
I think, a such accident could happen under every government. It is not because the soviets were governing at this time that the accident happend. It could have happened nowadays, for example, or even in Three Mile Island Nuclear plants in Harrisburg, PA. So I think, that we should stop thinking that the soviets caused the accident.

The mask was placed there by a photographer years before to "visually enhance" his shot. Even journalists are not exempt from bending the rules and spreading truth very thinly. Your shot is well composed, the symbol of horror that is the mask, right in the foreground instantly instills fear.
matt - 2009-05-03 14:51:13
absolutely without a doubt, the most horrifying picture I have yet seen. I will have nightmares
matt - 2009-05-03 14:44:08
I have seen this doll in many photos previous to this. Just as the sarcophagus has become a pictorial symbol of the tragedy, I believe this doll has also.
matt - 2009-05-03 14:36:38
i disagree with the goose. It is a perfect example of what happens when controls, measures, safety procedures etc. are not met, and when peoples lives are entrusted to mindless, soulless governing bodies, such as the one governing chernobyl at the time. Your dim view of a future you will share is pathetic, not prophetic.
Julio - 2009-04-30 16:52:45
That's what happens when human presence disappears from a place. Nature recovers its natural, rightful place and proliferates.

originally they wanted to build 12 reactors, the building from the accident has the first 4 of the project, reactor 4 exploded (reactor4.be ;-). This was the building for reactor 5 & 6, build during the time of the accident. Right after the accident they stopped working, so its there now for 23 years now...

Oh, we used to carry around signs like that on mass-meetings back in Romania in the 1980s: the five-pointed communist star, the hammer and sickle...the joy we were forced to display at those meetings was sickening and fear a constant companion! so, for me these symbols will always mean reppression in every way, no matter how many rays the sun will shine beneath them or in what context
